Interpretive information |
This is one of 4 photos that seem to be from the same album. Each has remains of black paper on the back along the top edge, is marked 1920 or 1920's, and two are marked "C. Babbitt." The fact that these stones look so uniform is explained by the fact that they are replacement stones and were all installed at the same time. An August 16, 1895 article in the Enfield Advocate that stated that "Elder William Wilson has had about thirty head stones erected in the burial grounds of the South Family of Shakers" It was also noted that the work was done by George Fletcher Andrews, who had a marble shop in Enfield Center. |
