Description |
Stereoview card. Photographer is in the Great Stone Dwelling looking north to the North Family. In the foreground is the Trustee's Horse Barn. Beyond the barn to the right are gardens, with the Fourth New Hampshire Turnpike to the left, lined with maple trees. Beyond the gardens is the North Family. Visible from the left is part of the Laundry, the Wood House, Brother's Shop, Dwelling House, Sister's Shop, Cooperage. On the right side of the highway is the Trustee's Office, two large barns, a workshop, and a small shed. Beyond the North Family buildings is Shaker Mountain to the left, and Mascoma Lake to the right with the Shaker Bridge in the distance. Beyond the lake in the far distance is Mount Tug. The card has rounded corners and orange paper on the front. The images are 3-1/8" square. In the gap between the two images there are two dots of black ink on the orange paper - one near the top and the other near the bottom of the images. These alignment marks are commonly seen on Brigham cards. The back is pink. In the center is printed in black ink "Photographed by / E.T. Brigham, / Lebanon, / N.H." In blue ink by Robert Leavitt is written at the top "View of North Family Shakers Enfield, N.H." and in the lower right "Leavitt collection" On the left side is a very faint word that begins with "E" which appears on other cards in this series. |

This photo was taken by Ephraim T. Brigham and published on at least two different stereoview card stocks by him, and later by C.E. Lewis as well. There are four stereoview images taken from the Great Stone Dwelling looking north to the North Family. This image taken by E.T. Brigham, two different images taken by C.E. Lewis, and one by W.G.C.
