Description |
Stereoview card. Photo taken from the Brook Shop, possibly the second floor, looking northwest across the Church Family gardens toward the Laundry/Factory/Infirmary area. In the foreground is a disturbed area of ground, with young onion plants in neat rows beyond. A path extends to the north, dividing the onion field in half. Beyond the field can be seen (l to r) Girl's House/Spin Shop, Laundry, Factory/Hacienda, Infirmary, Dentist's shop, Garden Shop, part of a Garden Barn. In the C.E. Lewis numbered stereoview series, this image is #8, but this card does not have the printed list affixed to the back. The card has rounded corners and orange paper on the front. The images have shallow arches on the top edges, and are straight on the remaining three sides. The back is pink, which is faded around the edges. A stamp at a 45 degree angle in the middle of the card reads "From / C. E. Lewis, / Photographer, / Lebanon, N. H." in red ink. At the top center in Robert Leavitt's handwriting in pencil is written "Onion Patch / Church Family" and in the upper right corner in blue pen "#8." |

Interpretive information |
This is the card format and image of #8 in the Lewis numbered stereoview series, but this card does not have the paper with the list affixed to the back. The related image 2001.9.24 was printed from an overexposed and damaged negative, likely a copy. It seems the original negative is in the Leavitt glass plate negative collection, scanned as "viewofon.tiff." Another image 2001.9.43 was taken from a similar place at a later time, quite possibly later that same season. The garden layout is the same, but the plants much larger. |
