Description |
Enfield seed box with 89 Enfield Shaker seed packets. The lid of the box is pine with poplar bread board ends, attached to the back of the case with two leather hinges. The remainder of the box - front, back, sides, bottom and dividers - is poplar. The sides are joined to the front and back with through dovetails, and the bottom is nailed to them. There is an iron latch box let into the front of the box and the lid has an iron catch which engages it. The box is painted red, and the words "Garden Seeds / from" is stencilled on the front. The words Garden and Seeds are on either side of the latch and are stencilled in and arch, the word "from" is below the latch. There are fragments of letters on the front edge of the bottom, with no corresponding lettering above on the front. The letters "HRP" are stencilled on the proper left side. The bottom of the lid has a large label with the heading "Garden Seeds / Raised by / The United Society of Shakers, / Enfield, Grafton County, N.H. / Each paper marked N.D. / The following packed in box" Below is a list of the seeds packets with the number of each type. At the bottom is printed "Orders addressed to John Bradford, Enfield, Grafton Co., N.H. by mail or otherwise, punctually / attended to" and in the lower right corner "188" (the last year of the date has not been filled in) On the lower, proper right bottom edge are two labels listing types of beets, beans, and peas. On the opposite lower, proper left bottom edge is a label listing several types of seeds. The interior of the case has 5 dividers, one is missing. 89 Enfield Shaker seed packets remain in the box. There is a string that is stapled to the underside of the lid which connects to a hook in one of the dividers to secure the top open. There are three small labels attatched to the top edge of the front of the case. |
