Description |
Enfield side chair. Elongated finials with medial scribe mark, slight shoulder at junction with top of post. Scribe marks at tip and bottom of slat mortises. Slats have uneven bevels on top edge, flatter than often seen on Enfield chairs. Top slat secured to post with two pegs, middle slat has a single peg. Posts and slats are birch, but the seat rails and stretchers are all ash. Seat rails feel like they are shaped for rush, but are covered with replacement tape seat. Posts have as single scribe locating all rail and stretcher mortises. Chair has been heavily sanded, original finish gone. Chairs appears to have been apart, is assembled askew. One tilter present, other missing with remains of leather thong present. The extant tilter is nailed in place. Location and shape of the leather thong attachment locations is unusual in that the hole is small and the nail hole is rather farther away than usual. |
