Description |
Poplarware pincushion. Poplarware cloth is a repeating pattern of 6 strands of straw and 4 strands of poplar seen on other Enfield poplarware items - BUT - one of the poplar strands is replaced by straw. The poplar cloth is trimmed in kid leather and the two ends were secured with a ribbon, now missing. The top fabric was likely pink velvet, now faded, divided into 8 segments with thread. A small and tightly stitched "spiderweb" design is stitched in the center where the threads converge. The bottom is boxboard and covered with white paper that has a shiny surface. A stamp on the bottom reads "From The Shakers, / Enfield, N.H." |

Interpretive information |
The poplarware cloth in this pincushion has an unusual weaving pattern. Enfield poplarware items often have a repeating pattern of 6 poplar and 4 straw (or visa versa). This piece has the same weaving pattern but one of the 4 poplar strips is replaced by one piece of straw. |
