Table |
Description |
Base of a table with initials in black paint. This table base (top missing) is sturdily built of maple. The legs have an unusual shape in that they are not square at the top where they are joined to the skirts. The legs are 3" along the long axis of the table by 2-1/2" deep over the area of the skirt attachment, approx 8-1/2". Below the skirt, a half-round step reduces the wider dimension by 1/2", leaving a square cross-section. The square cross-section continues for almost 4" before the transition to the round lower leg with a ring turning at the transiton. The lower legs are turned round, with no taper to the ground. The skirts are substantial, measuring 1-1/4" thick and 8" high and are joined to the legs with double tenons which are pegged. The insides of the skirts have interesting curved tool marks. There is the shadow of a missing piece on the insides of the front and back skirts near the top with 2 nail holes (one has nail fragment) The exterior of the table has a clear finish, that is uneven and may have been intentionally grain painted. The letters "IR" are painted on the front skirt in black paint in a flowing script. The back skirt has had the lower half crudely sawn away. There are numerous nail holes, hammer marks, and scuffs attesting to rough handling in the past. |
