Description |
Large chest with four drawers. The lid of the chest has applied moldings on the front and sides, the hinges are replacements. There are two straps of old chair tape (one is broken) which restrict the lid's travel backward when open, secured to the lid and sides with brass tacks. There are four drawers below the lidded upper box, with the upper two half-width and the lower two the full width of the chest. The upper drawers each have a single hardwood pull and the lower drawers have two each, all attached with a screw - one pull does not match the other five. The drawer fronts are lipped and molded with a quarter round profile on all four sides. The drawers are joined with through dovetails at the back and half-blind dovetails at the front - all the dovetails have rather steep tails, hinting at the age of the chest. The sides of the drawer are rounded on the top edges. All drawer bottoms are a single piece of pine with the grain running from right to left. The sides of the chest are cut into a bootjack shape at the bottom creating front and back feet. The chest is all pine, and is notable for the size, width, and clearness of the pine boards used in its construction. The back is a single board 35-1/4" wide. The chest is painted a salmon color of an unknown era. There is a bright yellow paint below it. |
