Machine, Tongue & Groove |
Description |
Machine operated matching plane to cut tongue and groove on staves. This is part of a larger machine, and was driven by a pitman arm attached to the bracket at the top front. Guides on the sides ran on ways attached to the base of the machine (not extant). Three cutters on each side provided progressive cuts to first flatten, then form either the tongue or groove. The cutters on the right side cut the tongue and the cutters on the left side cut the groove. The front two cutters and wedges on the left side (groove) are missing. Screw repairs on the right side of the body where the iron wedges split the wood. Base is machined cast iron. The irons are tapered and have not been removed to inspect for makers marks. Plane shows extensive wear from use. Holes and scribe lines in the top front of the body indicate there may have been an earlier bracket there. |
